Network License Issues

If your site is using Interleaf Network Licensing (INL) rather than node locked licensing, there are some items your administrator may want to know.

User Inactivity Period

Although it is "best practice" to start Interleaf only when you actually intend to use it and to exit when you are done (particularly if you have more potential users than you have actual INL licenses), this is not always followed. Perhaps someone got called to a meeting or went to lunch, leaving Interleaf on.

If you can find their machine and exit Interleaf, you can proceed with your work. If, however, they have locked their screen or are located in a different building, you probably must wait until someone else exits Interleaf.

To avoid this, have your administrator change the inl.lsp file. On UNIX systems, this is normally located in the directory:
/interleaf/ileaf5/data/license
The file contains instructions, and more information is at the end of chapter 5 of the Interleaf 5 System Administration manual.

With this feature, if a user remains idle for longer than the site "user inactivity period" (normally 30 to 60 minutes) then Interleaf can reassign that license to a different user. When the first user returns, they can choose to re-license immediately (if a license is available), wait until one becomes available, or simply exit Interleaf. Wait-time is reduced and more people can use Interleaf as needed.

License Manager Hang-up On Apollo

Interleaf 5.3.1 on Apollo Domain/OS was shipped with a license manager which can hang up if you exceed 20 or so concurrent users, drop below that number and then exceed it again.

To determine which license manager you have, an administrator should check the /usr/adm/license.log file for the lmgrd startup line. The older version reads "FLEXlm (v2.21)", while the newer, fixed, version is "FLEXlm (v2.40)."

If you have a small number of licenses, or if you are on a different platform, [or a newer revision] then this should not be a problem for you.
